Brooklyn Sanctuary

Brooklyn Sanctuary is a large private nature reserve covering about 600 square kilometres in the tropical north-east of Queensland, Australia, lying less than 100 kilometres north-west of Cairns. Acquired in 2004 by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, the reserve straddles an important ecological transition between the Wet Tropics bioregion and the drier Einasleigh Uplands bioregion, sitting across the Mount Carbine Tableland. The landscape is unusually varied for a single property. It ranges from rugged, rainforested mountain peaks reaching roughly 1,200 metres in elevation, where annual rainfall approaches 4,000 millimetres, to much drier lowland plains in the upper Mitchell River catchment where rainfall drops below 900 millimetres. Part of the sanctuary is listed for its World Heritage significance. Brooklyn is recognised primarily for the conservation of upland endemic species, and supports a rich mix of rainforest-dependent birds and mammals. Its ecosystems include rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest, eucalyptus woodlands, melaleuca gallery forest and floodplain lakes.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
