Calectasia Conservation Park

Calectasia Conservation Park is a small protected area in the Australian state of South Australia, situated in the locality of Wattle Range roughly 25 kilometres west of the town of Penola. The park lies on the southern side of the Robe to Penola Road and covers approximately 14 hectares within the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Short. Although modest in size, the conservation park is notable for the ecological features it conserves, including a remnant stranded dune system, a seasonal freshwater swamp, and a population of the blue tinsel lily, a plant that has become rare in South Australia. The park was first gazetted as the Calectasia National Parks Reserve in 1967 under the state's National Parks Act 1966, and was subsequently renamed in 1972 following the proclamation of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. It is classified as an IUCN Category IV protected area, reflecting its primary role in managing habitat for specific native species rather than preserving a broad natural landscape. The site's combination of dune woodland, seasonal swampland, and a fenced enclosure around a rare plant population gives it an unusually focused conservation character for its small footprint. Calectasia Conservation Park lies within the broader South Australian region that was affected by the Ash Wednesday bushfires of February 1983, an event that shaped the vegetation structure visible across the reserve today. The park is managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Water, and continues to function primarily as a habitat and species management reserve rather than a recreational destination.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
