Catanduanes Watershed Forest Reserve

Catanduanes Watershed Forest Reserve is a large water and nature protection area on Catanduanes Island, in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. It covers roughly 26,000 hectares across the southern and central portions of the island, and it is recognized as the principal source of water supply for the province of Catanduanes. Established through Presidential Proclamation No. 123 in 1987, it is managed as a critical upland forest reserve that also feeds a small hydroelectric facility serving local communities. The reserve lies on hilly to mountainous terrain, reaching its highest point on Mt. Boctot at 803 meters above sea level. The vast majority of its area remains forested, although only a portion of that forest qualifies as older-growth or near-natural woodland. Where natural stands survive, they are dominated by dipterocarp trees. Together with its extensive forested catchment, the reserve sustains an important population of endemic and forest-dependent wildlife on an island otherwise shaped by typhoon exposure and agricultural land use. Although designated as a watershed reserve rather than a tourism-focused site, it plays a central role in regional conservation. It shelters rare amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, including the endemic cloud rat, and serves as one of the broadest contiguous forest blocks still standing on Catanduanes. Its ecological value is closely linked to its hydrological function, making it both a watershed safeguard and a refuge for forest biodiversity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
