Chini Lake

Chini Lake is a freshwater lake system in the Pekan District of Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia, recognised as one of the country's two UNESCO Biosphere Reserves alongside the Crocker Range in Sabah. Often described as the second largest natural freshwater lake in Malaysia after Tasik Bera, the site is made up of a cluster of twelve connected lakes fed by the surrounding catchment and drained by the Chini River into the Pahang River. The lake's shores and islands are home to the Jakun branch of the Orang Asli, the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia, whose villages have long been intertwined with the lake's identity, folklore, and traditional livelihoods. Chini Lake is also culturally famous for the legend of Naga Seri Gumum, a dragon said to inhabit its waters, and for unverified beliefs about an ancient sunken Khmer city resting at the bottom of the lake. Ecologically, Chini Lake is known for its lotus blooms, which between June and September transform the surface into a floating garden of white and pink flowers. The reserve's broader landscape combines lowland tropical forest, open water, wetland margins, and small islands, but it has also been the focus of long-running concerns about logging, iron ore and manganese mining, sedimentation, and water quality decline.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
