Engbertsdijksvenen

Engbertsdijksvenen is a Dutch nature area in the province of Overijssel, close to the German border and the villages of Kloosterhaar and Westerhaar-Vriezenveensewijk. It lies in the Twenterand municipality and covers roughly 1000 hectares of peatland, heathland, ponds and raised bog remnants. The reserve is managed by Staatsbosbeheer and is a designated Natura 2000 site, forming part of the European network of protected nature areas. What sets the area apart is its extraordinary share of the Netherlands' remaining active raised bog, or 'levend hoogveen'. Of the country's extremely limited total of living high moor, a large proportion is concentrated here, giving the site an outsized importance for peatland conservation. The terrain combines bog, heath, sand ridges and woodland, with notable open water bodies that mark the legacy of historical peat cutting. Today Engbertsdijksvenen is appreciated both as a conservation anchor for high moor ecology and as a place for quiet recreation. Marked walking routes and bird observation points allow visitors to experience the bog and heath without disrupting the fragile hydrology that the reserve was restored to protect.
