Ettrick Conservation Park

Ettrick Conservation Park is a small protected area in the Australian state of South Australia, located in the locality of Ettrick about 80 kilometres east of Adelaide and roughly 24 kilometres north-east of Murray Bridge. The park lies within the broader Murray-Darling landscape, a region historically shaped by seasonal river flows, broad agricultural clearing, and the slow contraction of native vegetation into isolated refuges. The conservation park protects an unusual mix of habitats for an area of its size. Most of the park consists of open mallee, a hardy woodland dominated by several species of small eucalypt that have adapted to dry, nutrient-poor conditions. The park is also notable for containing one of the few remaining examples of tussock grassland in this part of the Murray-Darling Basin, a vegetation type that has been widely cleared and is considered critically endangered. Although Ettrick Conservation Park is small, its combination of mallee and tussock grassland gives it real ecological significance. It provides refuge for ground-dwelling birds such as the malleefowl, a range of smaller woodland songbirds, and other species that depend on the structural complexity and open ground cover of these habitats. The park is managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Water under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 and is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area, a designation that allows for the sustainable use of natural resources alongside conservation objectives.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
