Fahner Höhe

Fahner Höhe is a long, narrow, densely forested ridge in the southwestern part of the Thuringian Basin in central Germany. Formed from Muschelkalk limestones and shaped by the upwelling of underlying Zechstein salt deposits, it rises up to roughly 250 meters above the surrounding lowland, making it one of the most prominent inner elevations of the basin after the Ettersberg to the east. The ridge runs in a northwest to southeast direction, is about 12 kilometers long and up to 4 kilometers wide, and is dominated almost entirely by woodland. The landscape is notable for its extensive oak and hornbeam forests, beech stands on the shaded northern slopes, and a rich ground flora that includes the Siberian iris, cross gentian, yellow monkshood, and the spring snowflake. The Bienstädter Warte, a medieval watchtower, and a historic post windmill in Kleinfahner are widely recognized landmarks of the area. As both a landscape protection area and a European Natura 2000 site, Fahner Höhe combines ecological significance with a long tradition of forestry and local recreation. The ridge serves as an important near-natural recreation area for the surrounding communities and the cities of Erfurt, Gotha, and Bad Langensalza. Its quiet forest roads, the Blütengrund near Ballstädt, the spring blossoms along the northern slopes, and the ridge trail itself attract walkers, cyclists, and nature observers throughout the year.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
