Transboundary wetland reserve protecting Lake Fertő and the Hanság marshes at the Austria-Hungary border

Fertő-Hanság National Park

Fertő-Hanság National Park is a transboundary protected area in northwestern Hungary, sharing its eastern shoreline with Austria's Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park. Established in 1991 and expanded in 1994 to incorporate the Hanság marshland, the park encompasses the distinctive Lake Fertő (Lake Neusiedl), one of Central Europe's largest and the westernmost continental salt lake in Eurasia. The park's unique character derives from its shallow, reed-fringed lake system, expansive alkaline grasslands (puszta), and rehabilitated marshland that together create a rich mosaic of wetland habitats supporting exceptional biodiversity. The area holds international recognition as both a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1979 and a Ramsar Convention Wetland of International Importance since 1989, reflecting its outstanding ecological significance for migratory waterbirds and specialized salt-tolerant vegetation.
