Flatside Wilderness

Flatside Wilderness is a 9,507-acre federally protected wilderness area in central Arkansas, located within the eastern Ouachita National Forest. It spans southern Perry County and northwestern Saline County, with most of its acreage falling in Saline County. The wilderness is recognized for its rugged sandstone ridges, broad forested summits, clear mountain streams, and a notable segment of the Ouachita National Recreation Trail. The area lies within the Ouachita Mountains, a regionally distinct range characterized by east-west oriented ridges and valleys rather than the more familiar north-south Appalachian structure. Several named summits and pinnacles rise above 1,000 feet, with White Oak Mountain forming the highest ridge in the wilderness. Flatside Wilderness is one of six designated wilderness areas in the Ouachita National Forest and its easternmost, making it a key component of Arkansas's wilderness system. Ecologically and scenically, the wilderness offers a combination of high-relief forested terrain, perennial streams, and panoramic overlooks. It is valued as a relatively undisturbed backcountry experience within driving distance of central Arkansas, and it plays a meaningful role in protecting representative Ouachita forest ecosystems.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
