Fledermausquartier Brauereikeller Frankfurt (Oder)

The Fledermausquartier Brauereikeller Frankfurt (Oder) is a small but nationally important nature reserve located in the center of the city of Frankfurt (Oder) in Brandenburg, Germany. Covering just 1.34 hectares, the protected area centers on the ruins of a 19th-century brewery that closed in 1950, whose brick cellars and upper floors have become one of the largest and most significant winter roosts for bats in all of Germany. More than 30 bat species have been recorded in the ruin, and it currently serves as the largest known winter roost for the Greater Mouse-eared Bat (Myotis myotis) in the country. The site's combination of frost-free cellar vaults, high humidity, exposed position on the Oder river slope, and proximity to the river corridor creates microclimatic conditions that make it exceptionally attractive to hibernating bats from across the region, including individuals originally ringed as far away as the Müritz and the Czech Republic. Beyond its ecological role, the reserve represents a remarkable example of urban conservation: a citizens' initiative in late-1980s East Germany fought demolition plans, leading to decades of legal protections, planning restrictions, and eventual acquisition by the EuroNatur foundation in 2003. The site is protected as a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) under Brandenburg law and is also designated as a Habitats Directive (FFH) site, recognizing its transboundary importance for bat conservation in the Oder region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
