Giwining / Flora River Nature Park

Giwining / Flora River Nature Park is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, centered on a roughly 25 kilometre stretch of the Flora River and the many springs and tufa dams that feed into it. It lies southwest of Katherine and well south of the territory's capital, Darwin, in a tropical savanna landscape shaped by ancient limestone geology and seasonal tropical rivers. The park is jointly managed by the Northern Territory Government and the Wardaman people, the traditional owners of the surrounding country. Its combination of permanent freshwater springs, dramatic travertine formations, and rich riverine habitat gives the reserve a distinctive character within the broader Katherine region, while its remoteness keeps it firmly in the category of quiet, nature-focused Northern Territory parks. The reserve is best known for the rare geological spectacle of its tufa and travertine formations along spring-fed creeks, for its popular barramundi fishing, and for short walks leading to scenic waterfalls such as Kathleen Falls and Djarrung Falls. Because of the presence of saltwater crocodiles, swimming and boating are not permitted, shaping both the park's safety advice and the way visitors experience its waterways.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
