Goose Island Conservation Park

Goose Island Conservation Park is a protected marine-island reserve in the Australian state of South Australia, set within the Spencer Gulf off the coast near Port Victoria. The park is built around Goose Island and a cluster of small neighboring islets and rocks scattered around Wardang Island, encompassing terrain that is otherwise uninhabited and largely undisturbed. The protected area is small in size but ecologically important, since the islands function as an offshore refuge where seabirds can breed in safety and Australian sea lions can haul out away from mainland pressures. The park's protected status was first established in 1966, when Goose Island and White Rock Island, together with rocks to the northwest, were declared fauna reserves under South Australian fauna conservation legislation. The area was upgraded to a conservation park in 1972, formalizing its role as a refuge for seabird colonies and sea lion populations. The reserve is administered by the Department for Environment and Water and is recognized internationally through BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area for its black-faced cormorant breeding numbers.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
