Großer Weidenteich

Großer Weidenteich is a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the Vogtlandkreis district of Saxony, Germany, and the largest protected area of its kind in the district. Established in 1994, it covers approximately 334.9 hectares of open countryside north of Kobitzschwalde (part of the municipality of Weischlitz) and east of Rößnitz (part of the municipality of Rosenbach/Vogtl.). Despite the name referencing a pond, the reserve is best understood as an open-landscape habitat maintained largely by sheep grazing, threaded with small pools and marshy patches that sustain an unusually varied flora and fauna. The reserve is recognized for its exceptional species richness, hosting nearly 700 butterfly species and about 150 bird species, of which roughly 70 nest within the protected area. Its ponds and wet depressions shelter threatened amphibians and dragonflies such as the northern crested newt, the large whiteface dragonfly, and the marsh frog, while the surrounding grasslands and shrub zones carry a diverse, traditionally managed plant community. As an IUCN Category IV Habitat/Species Management Area, Großer Weidenteich exemplifies the role of Saxon nature reserves in conserving open, semi-natural cultural landscapes and the species that depend on them. Its combination of water bodies, marshland, grassland, and shrub vegetation supports a mosaic of habitats that would not persist without active grazing management.
