Hoge Kempen National Park

Hoge Kempen National Park is the first national park established in the Flemish region of Belgium, located in the eastern part of Limburg province in the Campine area. The park spans approximately 67 square kilometres between the city of Genk and the Meuse River valley, occupying a distinctive elevated plateau that forms a watershed between the Meuse and Demer river basins. The landscape is characterized by extensive heathlands, pine forests, and rolling terrain formed from glacial deposits left by the Meuse during the last Ice Age. Established in 2006 after initial protection efforts began in 1990, the park represents a significant achievement in Flemish nature conservation, forming part of the Natura 2000 network and receiving recognition for its innovative approach to integrating nature protection with sustainable tourism and economic development in a densely populated region.
