James Peak Wilderness

James Peak Wilderness is a U.S. Wilderness Area in north central Colorado, jointly administered by the Arapaho and Roosevelt national forests. It lies immediately east of the Continental Divide, spanning portions of Gilpin County and Clear Creek County, and borders the Indian Peaks Wilderness to the north as well as the James Peak Protection Area to the west. The landscape is defined by rugged alpine terrain, high peaks above 13,000 feet, forests, and glacial valleys typical of the central Colorado Rockies. Because of its elevation, location along the Divide, and proximity to the Front Range, the wilderness offers a classic Rocky Mountain experience centered on subalpine and alpine environments. Although relatively compact at roughly 17,000 acres, James Peak Wilderness is significant as a formally designated wilderness area, providing a high level of protection for its ecosystems, scenery, and wildlife habitat, while serving as an important natural buffer between major national forest lands and the Front Range urban corridor.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
