Kisatchie National Forest

Kisatchie National Forest is the only National Forest in Louisiana, spanning more than 600,000 acres of public land across seven central and northern parishes. It lies within the Cenozoic uplands, among some of the oldest exposed rock formations in the state, and protects extensive longleaf pine forests and flatwoods that have declined sharply across the southern landscape. Beyond its pine-dominated hills, the forest harbors rare habitats such as hillside seepage bogs and calcareous prairies, and surrounds the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness, a nationally designated area contributing to the biodiversity of the Gulf coastal plain. The forest is recognized as one of the largest intact natural landscapes remaining in Louisiana, with management by the United States Forest Service. It supports diverse plant communities including wild orchids and carnivorous plants, and provides habitat for rare species such as the Louisiana pine snake, the red-cockaded woodpecker, and the Louisiana black bear. Visitors use the forest for hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, wildlife viewing, camping, and hunting across more than forty developed recreation sites and a hundred miles of trail. Established in 1930 under President Herbert Hoover, Kisatchie National Forest takes its name from the Kichai people of the Caddo Confederacy. Its protection role extends from expansive pine restoration efforts to the preservation of small but nationally significant prairie remnants and cypress-tupelo swamps, making it a key refuge for the natural heritage of the South Central Plains.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
