Kouchibouguac National Park
Kouchibouguac National Park is a coastal protected area located on the east coast of New Brunswick, Canada, in the community of Kouchibouguac. Established in 1969, the park preserves a representative section of the Canadian Maritime Plain region, encompassing a diverse landscape of barrier islands, extensive sand dunes, lagoons, salt marshes, and forested areas. The park covers approximately 238 square kilometres along the Gulf of St. Lawrence coastline, featuring 25 kilometres of sand dunes that form one of its most distinctive natural features. The park protects critical habitat for approximately 50 species listed under Canada's Species at Risk Act, including the endangered piping plover, and supports the second largest tern colony in North America. Beyond its ecological significance, the park holds profound cultural importance as the site of a difficult chapter in Canadian conservation history, when seven communities and hundreds of families were expropriated to create the protected area.
