Kranenmeer

Kranenmeer is a small nature reserve in the western Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, centered on a modest lake embedded in a surviving fragment of heath moor. Although the lake itself covers less than a hectare, the protected area extends to roughly 140 hectares of surrounding bog, wet heath, and woodland, representing one of the few remaining examples of this habitat type in the Westmünsterland. The reserve lies in the southern part of the municipality of Heiden, near the border with Dorsten, within a rural landscape shaped by centuries of agricultural use. Its ecological significance comes from the combination of open water, bog vegetation, and adjacent alder carr woodland in a single compact site, supporting plant and animal communities that have largely disappeared from the surrounding countryside. In addition to its national protection as a Naturschutzgebiet since 1950, a core zone of about 9 hectares has been designated as a European Natura 2000 site under the EU Habitats Directive. This layered recognition reflects both the regional rarity of the habitat and its importance within the broader European network of protected wetland ecosystems.
