Kuop

Kuop, also known as Neoch, is a small coral atoll in Chuuk State within the Federated States of Micronesia. It lies in the Pacific Ocean only a few kilometers south of the southern tip of Chuuk Lagoon, forming part of one of the most remote island chains in Micronesia. The atoll is uninhabited and is officially recognized as the largest marine protected area in the Federated States of Micronesia, giving it a quiet but significant role in regional ocean conservation. The atoll stretches along a roughly 21.5-kilometer axis and is ringed by a reef that supports a small number of low-lying islets and islands. Despite its modest land area, the surrounding lagoon and reef system form the core of its ecological value, providing a largely undisturbed marine habitat in an otherwise heavily used oceanic region. Its isolation has helped preserve it from development, leaving it as one of the few truly untouched atolls in Chuuk State. Historically, Kuop has had limited but notable human connections. It is believed to have been first recorded by the Spanish navigator Alonso de Arellano in 1565, and it later became an incidental site during World War II when a Japanese destroyer ran aground on its reef in 1944. Today, Kuop stands out primarily as a conservation landscape rather than a settled island, representing one of the clearest examples of large-scale marine protection in the Micronesia region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
