Landgoederen Brummen

Landgoederen Brummen is a Dutch Natura 2000 protected area in the province of Gelderland, situated in the transitional zone between the sandy uplands of the Veluwe and the river clay deposits of the IJssel. It is a composite site built from three sub-areas: the Leusveld and Voorstonden estates and the Empese en Tondense heide nature reserve. The defining character of the area comes from seepage and spring water that surfaces where the two landscape types meet, producing a striking mixture of dry woodland, wet heath, acidic bog remnants, brook valleys, and species-rich grasslands on nutrient-poor soils. Designated on 4 May 2013 under the European Habitats Directive, the site safeguards several habitat types that have become rare in the Netherlands, including wet heaths, blue grasslands, oligotrophic pools, and alluvial alder forests along small streams. The combination of historic estate management and surviving wild habitat patches gives Landgoederen Brummen its distinctive identity, blending centuries of human land stewardship with protected natural communities. The area is modest in scale but ecologically dense, with conservation attention focused on two protected species in particular: the floating water plant known as the drijvende waterweegbree, and the crested newt. Both depend on the same kind of clean, nutrient-poor wet habitat that defines the property.
