LaVerkin Creek Wilderness

LaVerkin Creek Wilderness is a small protected wilderness area in Washington County, in southwestern Utah. Situated adjacent to the Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park, it covers only a compact footprint of land, yet it plays an outsize role in safeguarding the upper headwaters of LaVerkin Creek. Because LaVerkin Creek flows into the Virgin River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River, the wilderness is closely tied to the broader water and canyon landscape of the Zion region. The area was officially designated as wilderness on March 30, 2009, through the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009. It is administered by the Bureau of Land Management, and it borders the larger Zion Wilderness to the south. Although modest in scale, it forms part of a network of protected lands that together maintain the rugged cliffs, drainages, and creek corridors of the Kolob plateau and the surrounding canyon country. In practical terms, the wilderness represents the type of small, watershed-focused federal designation that links together larger national park landscapes and Wild and Scenic River systems. It exists primarily to keep the headwaters of LaVerkin Creek, and the high country through which they flow, in a natural state, free from roads, development, and other surface disturbance.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
