Loch Sunart

Loch Sunart is a sea loch on the west coast of Scotland in the Lochaber area of the Highland council region. It runs between the Sunart district of Ardnamurchan to the north and the Morvern district to the south, making it a defining natural feature of this remote Highland coastline. At roughly 31 kilometres in length, it is the longest sea loch in the Highland local government area and reaches depths of more than 120 metres in its central basins. The loch is best known for its rich marine environment, including flame shell beds, brittle star populations, serpulid worm reefs, sponges, and starfish. In 2014 the entire loch was designated a Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area by the Scottish Government, recognising the ecological importance of its seabed communities and extending protections into a much larger regional MPA that reaches the Sound of Jura. Beyond its ecological role, Loch Sunart also reflects layers of human history, from medieval legend and folklore tied to its islands, to nineteenth century disputes over church land use that led to the unusual creation of a floating iron church on its waters. Today it is recognised as both a working coastal environment and an internationally designated protected area.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
