Germany's last intact polder landscape on the German-Polish border
Lower Oder Valley National Park
Lower Oder Valley National Park is a protected area spanning the lower reaches of the Oder River on the German-Polish border in northeastern Brandenburg, Germany, and the West Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland. The park encompasses Germany's last intact polder landscape, a unique floodplain system created through centuries of Dutch-style dike engineering along the river's western bank. Established in 1997 as the German core of the larger Lower Oder Valley International Park, the reserve covers approximately 165 square kilometers with about two-thirds on the German side. The landscape is characterized by expansive seasonally flooded meadows, levee systems, and a distinctive hydrological regime where winter and summer dikes are deliberately opened to allow natural flooding cycles that sustain the wetland ecosystem. The park forms part of the Natura 2000 network and serves as a critical habitat for numerous rare bird species, including the black stork, aquatic warbler, and corn crake, making it one of Central Europe's most important bird conservation areas.
