Mavrovo National Park

Mavrovo National Park is the largest of North Macedonia's four national parks, covering approximately 73,000 hectares in the western region of the country within the municipality of Mavrovo and Rostuse. Established in 1949, the park encompasses a dramatic landscape of three Alpine mountain systems—Šar, Korab, and Bistra—whose peaks exceed 2,700 meters, with Korab rising to 2,764 meters as the country's highest summit. Between these mountain ranges, the Radika River has carved a spectacular gorge stretching over 25 kilometers, with vertical cliffs rising more than 300 meters above the river. The park also features the highest waterfall in the Balkans at approximately 120 meters, alpine bogs remnant from the Ice Age, rare karst formations including caves in the Bistra mountains, and numerous glacial lakes scattered throughout the Alpine zone.
