Mønsted and Daugbjerg Chalk Mines and Mønsted Ådal

Natura 2000 Area No. 39 Mønsted and Daugbjerg Kalkgruber and Mønsted Ådal is a Danish protected landscape in central Jutland, designated as a European habitat area under the Natura 2000 network. It spans roughly 740 hectares across parts of Viborg and Skive municipalities, with the majority lying in Viborg Kommune and a smaller northern section within Skive Kommune. The site is defined by a clustered combination of features that rarely occur together: two ancient chalk mine complexes that supplied building lime for centuries, the deeply carved valleys of the Mønsted Å and Jordbro Å streams, and the clear-water lobelia lake Birkesø near its northern edge. It also includes heathlands, oak scrub, and planted beech and oak woodlands along and above the valley slopes. Ecologically, the area is significant for its combination of groundwater-fed spring mires in the river valleys, botanically rich dry and acidic grasslands, healthy stream habitats supporting species such as brook lamprey and otter, and most prominently for its internationally important bat hibernation caves.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
