Mount Shasta Wilderness

Mount Shasta Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in northern California, centered on the iconic Mount Shasta volcano. Located in Siskiyou County and managed by the U.S. Forest Service within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, the wilderness protects roughly 38,200 acres of glacial, volcanic, and forested terrain. The area is dominated by Mount Shasta, a massive isolated stratovolcano that reaches just over 14,000 feet and is one of only two peaks in California above that elevation outside the Sierra Nevada. Around it, the wilderness includes lava flows, hot springs, waterfalls, and a complex system of glaciers, making it a rare convergence of alpine, volcanic, and forested environments. Established by Congress in 1984, the wilderness draws visitors for its scenic and geological character as well as its recreational value. It serves as a hub for mountaineering, backpacking, and year-round alpine activity, while also protecting important stands of conifer forest and a handful of rare plant species found nowhere else.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
