Moutere Hauriri / Bounty Islands Marine Reserve

Moutere Hauriri / Bounty Islands Marine Reserve is a New Zealand marine reserve covering around 104,626 hectares of ocean around the remote subantarctic Bounty Islands. The islands themselves are a cluster of about twenty small granite islets and rocks, lying roughly 700 kilometers east-southeast of the South Island in the open Southern Ocean. The reserve was created in 2014 and is administered by the Department of Conservation as part of New Zealand's network of offshore marine protected areas. The islands are bare, exposed, and largely uninhabitable for plants, yet they support some of the densest seabird and seal populations in the New Zealand region. Surrounding waters are exceptionally clear and rich in marine life, drawing comparisons with tropical and northern Pacific ecosystems. The reserve is valued less for visitor access than for the strict protection it provides to one of the country's most undisturbed and biologically productive outpost ecosystems. The Māori name Moutere Hauriri, meaning roughly "island of angry wind," reflects the rough seas around the islands. Landings are tightly restricted by permit, and the surrounding territorial sea carries additional protections against bottom-disturbing fishing methods.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
