Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary

Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary is a protected woodland reserve in the Gungahlin district of north Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. Enclosed by a fox-proof fence, it guards a large remnant of the critically endangered white box, yellow box and Blakely's red gum grassy woodland, together with patches of native grassland and an open dam. The sanctuary is managed jointly by the ACT Government and the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust, and has become one of Australia's most active outdoor laboratories for woodland restoration. Researchers from the Australian National University, the CSIRO and partner organisations have used the reserve to trial reintroductions of locally extinct mammals and ground-nesting birds, and to study the recovery of woodland ecosystems in a controlled setting. Alongside the neighbouring Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve and Throsby Offsets, Mulligans Flat forms the largest remaining connected area of this woodland type in the country. A network of trails also makes the sanctuary a popular place for walking, running, cycling and guided nature activities in the Canberra region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
