Naturpark Pfälzerwald

Naturpark Pfälzerwald is a large protected natural area in the south of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, covering approximately 1,798 square kilometers along the French border. About 76 percent of its territory consists of the Palatinate Forest (Pfälzerwald), widely regarded as the largest contiguous woodland tract in Germany. Together with the French Regional Nature Park of the Northern Vosges on the other side of the border, it forms the transboundary UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges, one of the first such cross-border biosphere reserves in Europe. The park's landscape is shaped by striking red sandstone (Buntsandstein) rock formations, deeply incised valleys, and extensive mixed forests that transition into the Haardtrand and the eastern fringes along the German Wine Route (Deutsche Weinstraße). Internally, the nature park is divided into a Northern, Central, and Southern Pfälzerwald, with the southern section, together with its French counterpart, commonly referred to as the Wasgau. Twenty-three designated core zones (Kernzonen) protect particularly valuable forest and rock habitats within the broader park area. Naturpark Pfälzerwald stands out for combining large-scale woodland conservation with regional recreation, cultural landscapes, and international cooperation across the Franco-German border. Its elevation range of roughly 141 to 673 meters supports a diverse mosaic of forest types, rock habitats, and small valleys, making it a defining natural landmark of the Palatinate region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
