A forested Carpathian Natura 2000 refuge where old-growth beech woodlands shelter large carnivores and rare peatlands.

Ostoja Jaśliska

Ostoja Jaśliska is a proposed Special Area of Conservation and current Site of Community Importance within the European Union Natura 2000 network, located in the Beskid Niski mountain range in southeastern Poland. The site stretches across the Low Beskids between Łupków Pass in the east, Sarbowska Pass in the west, and the towns of Królik Polski, Dukla, and Mszana to the north, covering roughly 29,000 hectares of forested slopes, river valleys, and peatlands. The protected landscape is dominated by Carpathian beech forests, particularly fertile beech communities that alone account for around 40 percent of the area, alongside impoverished beechwoods, oak-hornbeam groves, sycamore stands, riparian forests, and small patches of alpine grassland and tall-herb vegetation. Embedded within these forests are raised bogs, transitional mires, and base-rich fens that give the site exceptionally high ecological diversity for a single Natura 2000 polygon. The area's most notable feature is the coexistence of large, viable populations of three apex carnivores: wolf, Eurasian lynx, and brown bear, supported by extensive tracts of connected forest habitat. These qualities, together with nine nature reserves inside the site boundary, give Ostoja Jaśliska a central role in the conservation of natural Carpathian ecosystems in Poland's Podkarpackie region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
