Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge

Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetland area located in the Chorrillos district of Lima, Peru, on the edge of one of South America's largest capital cities. Covering roughly 263 hectares of brackish lagoons and marshes, it sits within the otherwise arid coastal desert of the Pacific and represents one of the few remaining wetland habitats in metropolitan Lima. The refuge is internationally recognized as a Ramsar site, a designation it has held since 1997 in recognition of its ecological importance, particularly for waterbirds. It supports an exceptionally rich bird fauna for a site so close to an urban center, including resident species as well as migratory and seasonal visitors that use the marshes as resting and feeding habitat along the Pacific coast of South America. Beyond its ecological role, Pantanos de Villa is notable for what it represents: a surviving patch of coastal wetland despite decades of encroachment by urban growth, industrial development, and infrastructure expansion. Its existence within the boundaries of Lima makes it an important site for urban conservation, environmental education, and birdwatching in Peru.
