Parc naturel régional des Monts d'Ardèche

The Parc naturel régional des Monts d'Ardèche is a regional natural park in south-central France, covering the western highlands of the Ardèche department together with a few communes of neighbouring Haute-Loire. Created in 2001 and later expanded in 2013 to 2014, the park protects a varied mountain landscape built on ancient volcanic geology, deeply incised river valleys and traditional chestnut and blueberry economies. The park's identity rests on a strong sense of shared rural heritage: terraced agriculture, chestnut groves, religious history, old mills and moulinages (silk-spinning factories), and the distinctive 'sucs', the conical volcanic peaks that rise from the Mézenc massif. Since 2015, it has also been recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, highlighting the region's exceptional geological heritage. Today, the park spans over 248,000 hectares across roughly 152 communes and is home to about 83,000 inhabitants. It links the Boutières, the Haute Cévennes, the Cévenol Piedmont and the southern Cévennes into a single protected territory devoted to landscape, cultural and ecological balance.
