Pöllwitzer Wald

The Pöllwitzer Wald is a forest area in the Landkreis Greiz district of Thuringia, in eastern Germany, near the town of Zeulenroda-Triebes and stretching toward the Saxon border. It lies at a moderate elevation of roughly 450 meters above sea level and represents a centuries-old working forest whose character has been shaped by medieval timber use, early modern log-floating on local waterways, and more recent forestry cycles. Originally part of the broader Hercynian mixed mountain forest, the area has shifted from a varied mix of silver fir, spruce, and beech toward predominantly planted spruce stands, often mixed with larch and pine. Today it is recognized as a quiet local recreation landscape and an FFH-protected habitat area of about 962 hectares, with a moorland discovery trail and observation tower among its defining visitor features. The forest's history reaches back to at least 1359, when it was documented under the name Gehörne. Over the following centuries it became entangled with the territorial politics of the Vögte von Weida, the Reuss lords of the region, and the city of Gera, which secured long-distance log-floating rights via a specially constructed Flößgraben supplying the Weiße Elster river system. After centuries of exploitation, military use, and gradual ecological recovery, the Pöllwitzer Wald now combines cultural heritage, woodland, and protected wetland in a single contiguous landscape.
