Reserva Ecológica Cofán-Bermejo

Reserva Ecológica Cofán-Bermejo is a large protected natural area in northeastern Ecuador, located along the upper reaches of the Bermejo, Chandia Na'en, and Ccuccono river basins. It lies in the canton of Cascales in Sucumbíos Province, bordering Colombia across the San Miguel River. The reserve covers an extensive elevational gradient from approximately 400 to 2,200 meters, creating a transition between lowland Amazonian rainforest, montane Andean forests, and páramo vegetation near Cerro Sur Pax. The area is both ecologically and culturally significant. Ecologically, it harbors a remarkable convergence of Amazonian and Andean flora, exceptional bird diversity including species recorded nowhere else in Ecuador, and important populations of threatened mammals such as the Andean tapir and the spectacled bear. Culturally, the reserve lies within the ancestral territory of the Cofán people of Sinangoe, who administer it through their own indigenous federation in coordination with Ecuador's environmental authorities. As an IUCN Category Ia strict nature reserve and a recognized Important Bird Area, Cofán-Bermejo represents a model of indigenous-led conservation in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Its ecosystems remain largely pristine, and it is one of the most biologically rich protected landscapes in the country.
