About Réserve naturelle régionale des Sauvages

Réserve naturelle régionale des Sauvages

The Réserve naturelle régionale des Sauvages is a small French regional nature reserve located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, in the Haute-Vienne department of the former Limousin area. Officially classified on 20 November 2015 and designated as RNR308, it spans roughly 82 hectares and is managed by the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels du Limousin. The reserve sits within the commune of Saint-Sylvestre, immediately adjacent to the national nature reserve of the Dauges peat bog, placing it within a broader network of protected natural areas in the central-western highlands of France. Ecologically, the reserve is notable for bringing together a mosaic of habitats rarely found together in such a compact area. It contains heather-dominated moorland, open meadows, peatland formations, mature beech forest, and three ponds whose origins trace back to medieval times. This combination of wetlands, woodland, heath, and open water is what gives the Sauvages its distinctive ecological identity. Its small size belies its regional importance: the reserve plays a complementary role to the nearby Dauges peat bog national reserve, contributing to habitat continuity and biodiversity conservation in a part of France where semi-natural landscapes have been under long-term pressure from agricultural change.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
