It occupies about 151 hectares and was formally classified as a regional nature reserve on 16 June 2025, making it notable as France's first urban regional nature reserve. The reserve protects a mosaic of natural wetland habitats along the Sèvre Niortaise, including floodplain meadows, riparian woodland, marsh vegetation, grasslands, and a network of channels and waterways. It contains twelve habitats of community interest, four of which are priority habitats, reflecting its ecological importance within a regional context shaped by this coastal river. The site is valued for its biodiversity, including old ash trees that host saproxylic insects and bats, a notable colony of grey herons, and a mix of habitats that support a wide range of wetland-associated species.
