Riverland Biosphere Reserve

The Riverland Biosphere Reserve is a large protected landscape in eastern South Australia, adjoining the borders of New South Wales and Victoria. Spanning approximately 9,000 square kilometres, it lies where the mallee-dominated country of the Murray Mallee meets the riverine corridors of the Riverland along the Murray River, creating a varied mosaic of woodland, shrubland, floodplain, and wetland environments. Its native vegetation is overwhelmingly characterised by mallee woodland and shrubland, shaped by low rainfall and sandy soils, while the Murray River corridor introduces contrasting riverine vegetation and seasonally significant floodplain wetlands. The reserve brings together a network of differently owned and managed properties that share a commitment to identifying practical approaches to ecologically sustainable development in a low-productivity Australian landscape. Recognised by UNESCO as part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 1977, the Riverland Biosphere Reserve is one of fourteen biosphere reserves in Australia. Its floodplain wetlands are listed as internationally significant under the Ramsar Convention, and the broader landscape supports nationally important conservation programs, including recovery efforts for the endangered black-eared miner.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
