Rudice, Seč

Rudice – Seč is a small protected natural monument in the Czech Republic, located on the southwestern edge of the village of Rudice in the Blansko District of the South Moravian Region. It occupies the site of a former sand quarry and is notable as the only surface exposure of the so-called Rudice layers, a sequence of Lower Cretaceous sediments that contains fossils and a varied assemblage of silica and iron minerals. The protected area lies within the Drahanská vrchovina highlands and falls inside the Moravian Karst Protected Landscape Area. The abandoned quarry has developed two contrasting micro-environments: small standing-water pools at the quarry floor that support characteristic pond vegetation, and exposed sandy and clayey substrates where sparse, pioneer-type vegetation has established. These early successional communities are themselves subjects of protection, alongside the underlying geology, making the site a hybrid of geological and ecological conservation. Rudice – Seč reflects a long-term interplay between human use and natural processes. Iron ore was extracted here already in the Hallstatt period and the Early Middle Ages, and industrial extraction of glass and foundry sands continued until 2018. Today, the quarry walls, mineral concretions, and recovering ecosystems form a compact but scientifically valuable nature reserve that bridges geology, paleontology, and early-succession ecology.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
