About Sandgrasheiden am Elgersheimer Hof

Sandgrasheiden am Elgersheimer Hof

Sandgrasheiden am Elgersheimer Hof is a nature reserve in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen in the German state of Bavaria. It sits south of the small village of Fahr, part of the town of Volkach, and stretches between the village and the lonely farmstead known as the Elgersheimer Hof. The reserve protects two small areas of sand grassland, a habitat type that has become extremely rare across central Europe. The site is recognized as a Natura 2000 area and is part of the larger Maintal zwischen Schweinfurt und Dettelbach protected landscape that follows the Main river. Although small in size, the reserve is ecologically important because it shelters a population of Jurinea cyanoides, a plant species considered endangered at the European level. The combination of open sandy ground, dry grassland vegetation, and the surrounding forest and agricultural land gives the area a distinctive mosaic character that is unusual for the region.
