A shallow nutrient-rich lake in central Jutland with a century of conservation history

Skallesø

Skallesø is a shallow, nutrient-rich lake in the central Jutland region of Denmark, lying southwest of the town of Skive and east of Vinderup, across the boundary between Skive and Holstebro municipalities. The lake sits in a landscape of heath, plantation forest, and open farmland, connecting through the very short Hindså stream to the nearby Flyndersø and onward to the Skive Fjord via the larger Karup Å river system. The lake is most notable for its long-standing protected status and its unusual enclosure in Danish cultural memory. It was the target of a 19th-century land-reclamation attempt to drain it for agriculture, an effort that collapsed when the dam failed. Today the lake and its surrounding heaths and plantations form a designated Natura 2000 site combining both habitat and bird-protection designations. Skallesø forms part of the broader Hjerl Hede open-air museum landscape, where the surrounding protected heath and forest estates have been in conservation ownership for roughly a century. The area is recognized for its combination of aquatic habitat, raised-heath scenery, plantation woodland, and bird-rich wetland margins.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
