Tablas de Daimiel National Park

Tablas de Daimiel National Park is a wetland protected area located on the La Mancha plain in the province of Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Established in 1973, it represents the last surviving example of floodplain wetlands in the arid central part of the Iberian Peninsula. The park occupies approximately 3,030 hectares, making it the smallest of Spain's fifteen national parks. The wetland forms at the confluence of two rivers of contrasting nature: the Guadiana, which contributes fresh water from underground springs, and the Gigüela, which carries brackish waters. This unique hydrological combination creates a privileged ecosystem supporting exceptional biodiversity. The park serves as a critical waypoint for migratory birds traveling between northern Europe and Africa, hosting tens of thousands of waterfowl annually. Beyond its national significance, Tablas de Daimiel holds international protection as a Ramsar wetland, forms the core of the Mancha Húmeda Biosphere Reserve, and operates as a Special Protection Area for birds under European Union law.
