Slovakia's oldest national park protecting the alpine heart of the Carpathians

Tatra National Park

Tatra National Park is Slovakia's oldest national park, established on January 1, 1949, and serves as the centerpiece of protection for the Tatra Mountains, the highest range in the Carpathian Mountains. Located in north-central and eastern Slovakia, the park encompasses the Slovak portions of the Western Tatras and the Eastern Tatras, which include the renowned High Tatras and the Belianske Tatras. The park covers 738 square kilometers of dramatic alpine terrain, protecting over 100 mountain lakes known as tarns, more than 300 caves, and some of the most significant endemic flora and fauna in Europe. Its most iconic resident is the Tatra chamois, a critically endangered goat-antelope found nowhere else in the world. The park's ecological significance extends beyond Slovakia's borders, forming a transboundary biosphere reserve with the adjoining Polish national park since 1992.
