Tsimanampetsotsa National Park

Tsimanampetsotsa National Park is a 432-square-kilometer protected area on the south-west coast of Madagascar in the Atsimo-Andrefana region. The park encompasses the westernmost escarpment of the limestone Mahafaly Plateau and contains Lake Tsimanampetsotsa, a significant Ramsar-designated wetland. Established first as a protected area in 1927 and redesignated as a national park in 1966, Tsimanampetsotsa safeguards one of the world's most botanically distinctive ecoregions: the Madagascar spiny forests or "spiny desert" of southern Madagascar. This region represents the highest level of plant endemism in Madagascar, with 48% of genera and 95% of species found nowhere else on Earth, earning it recognition as one of the 200 most important ecological regions globally.
