Um die Großwiese
Um die Großwiese is a designated protected landscape, or Landschaftsschutzgebiet, in the northern Kraichgau region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It lies on the territory of the municipality of Bad Schönborn in the Landkreis Karlsruhe, just east of the Langenbrücken district. Established on 19 October 1990, the area preserves a typical Kraichgau mosaic of species-rich grassland, traditional orchards, hedgerows, small streams with accompanying riparian woodland, vineyards, and a tract of closed forest.
The protected area reflects the character of the Kraichgau's Vorbergzone, the foothill belt between the Black Forest and the Odenwald, where woodland, farmland, and small-scale cultural landscapes meet. A large part of the protected perimeter is bounded by the Bundesstraße 292 to the north, the Gründelgraben stream and the municipal boundary with Östringen to the east, and the boundary with Ubstadt-Weiher to the south. The area also overlaps with parts of the FFH site Nördlicher Kraichgau, linking its protection to the broader European Natura 2000 framework.
Beyond its ecological value, Um die Großwiese is designated as a recreation and curative landscape area for the local population. Its combination of open meadowland, traditional orchard meadows, vineyards, and oak-hornbeam forest gives it both visual diversity and agricultural continuity, making it a representative example of the cultural landscape of the northern Kraichgau.
