Wooldse Veen

Wooldse Veen is a small peatland nature reserve in the eastern Dutch province of Gelderland, on the southeastern outskirts of the municipality of Winterswijk near the German border. It protects an actively regenerating raised bog, a hoogveen, that forms a single transboundary ecosystem with the larger German Burlo-Vardingholter Venn und Entenschlatt area in Kreis Borken. The Dutch portion of Wooldse Veen covers roughly fifty hectares, while the adjacent German side adds more than a hundred hectares to a joint habitat that is recognised under the European Natura 2000 network and forms part of the wider Nationaal Landschap Winterswijk. Although the surviving bog is a fragment of a landscape once worked for peat, it has become a refuge for dwarf shrubs, peat mosses, and the dragonflies, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals that depend on wet acidic peatland. The reserve is valued less for grandeur than for ecological specificity. Its peat pools and the bog walls that were once the edges of dug-out turf sections now support newly forming raised bog and birch woodland, and its position right on the Dutch-German border has given the area a long history of cultural use, including the historic commiezenpad, a smugglers' patrol path that still runs along the state line through the peat.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
