Ancón Reserved Zone

The Ancón Reserved Zone is a Peruvian protected area that safeguards a coastal desert landscape and the marine waters of the Bay of Ancón on the central coast of Peru. It lies within the Lima Province of the Lima Region, spanning parts of the Ancón and Puente Piedra districts, and was formally established on May 10, 2013 through Ministerial Resolution No. 140-2013-MINAM. The reserve is notable for the unusual proximity of arid coastal desert to a productive marine environment, creating conditions where specialized plant and animal communities have adapted to one of the driest stretches of the Peruvian coastline. Its combination of terrestrial and marine ecosystems gives it strong potential for scientific research, environmental education, and conservation outreach focused on the often-overlooked natural values of Peru's central coast. Although relatively small in size, the Ancón Reserved Zone plays an important role in preserving representative samples of the central Peruvian coastal ecosystems and in promoting awareness of the biodiversity that thrives at the interface between desert and sea.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
