Arkemheen

Arkemheen is a Natura 2000 protected area in the Dutch province of Gelderland, designated primarily under the European Union Birds Directive. It covers a low-lying, very open polder landscape of around fourteen square kilometers, with partly saline grasslands along the freshwater border lakes that formed after the enclosure of the former Zuiderzee. The area straddles the municipalities of Nijkerk and Putten, near the town of Nijkerk, and is managed jointly by Natuurmonumenten, Staatsbosbeheer and private landowners. Its exceptionally old cadastral pattern, dating back to the fourteenth century, makes it one of the most historically intact polders in the Netherlands. Because no land consolidation has ever been carried out, the medieval parcelling is still visible in the field. Ecologically, Arkemheen is recognized as both a bird protection area under the Birds Directive and as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for its significance to meadow birds and waterfowl. The polder is also part of the Nationaal Landschap Arkemheen-Eemland, underlining its combined natural and cultural value.
