Reserva Biológica Colonso-Chalupas

Reserva Biológica Colonso-Chalupas is a large protected area in the Amazonian foothills of Ecuador, administered through the country's national system of protected areas. It lies between the Reserva Ecológica Antisana and Parque Nacional Llanganates, completing a continuous block of conservation land along the eastern slope of the Andes in the upper Napo River basin. The reserve stretches across an extreme elevational range, from warm, wet lowland forests near the Amazon basin to cold, high-altitude environments on the eastern Andean cordillera. This dramatic vertical gradient produces a wide diversity of climates, vegetation types, and ecological conditions, making the reserve an important refuge for both lowland and montane species. Colonso-Chalupas was formally established as a biological reserve in 2014, with the explicit goal of conserving natural processes and genetic resources in one of Ecuador's most biologically rich transitions between Andes and Amazon.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
