Ethabuka Reserve

Ethabuka Reserve is a large private nature reserve in Central West Queensland, Australia, positioned where the arid landscapes of the Simpson Desert give way to gibber floodplains and dune systems. Covering more than 2,100 square kilometres, it is managed by Bush Heritage Australia and sits adjacent to the Northern Territory border, forming a continuous block of protected desert wilderness together with the neighbouring Pilungah Reserve. The reserve is defined by its dunefield and swale topography, ephemeral drainage lines, and scattered semi-permanent wetlands such as the nationally significant Pulchera waterhole on the Mulligan River. Vegetation communities dominated by gidgee woodlands fringe the open sand plains, creating habitat for a rich suite of desert mammals, reptiles, and birds, several of which are of conservation concern. Ethabuka plays an important role in arid-zone conservation, supporting populations of species that have declined across much of their former range and forming part of the Simpson Desert Important Bird Area recognised by BirdLife International. Its remote character, combined with its ecological and conservation significance, makes it a key holding within the network of privately managed reserves protecting Australia's interior.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
