Francois Peron National Park

Francois Peron National Park is a protected coastal reserve on the Peron Peninsula in Western Australia, situated approximately 726 kilometres north of Perth and forming part of the internationally significant Shark Bay World Heritage Area. The park encompasses approximately 526 square kilometres of diverse terrain including red cliff formations, expansive saline flatlands known as birrida, and coastal lagoon systems along the peninsula's western edge. The park's name honours French naturalist and explorer François Péron, who served as zoologist aboard Nicolas Baudin's scientific expeditions to Western Australia in 1801 and 1803, and several landscape features within the park retain names from this French exploration era including Cape Lesueur, Guichenault, and Lake Montbazin. The area holds deep Aboriginal heritage, with the local Malgana peoples having inhabited the region for over 26,000 years and referring to the land as Wulyibidi. Prior to national park protection, the land functioned as Peron Station, a pastoral sheep operation from the early 1900s until government acquisition in 1990, with formal gazettal as a national park occurring in January 1993.
